Not sure which peroxide volume to use for bleaching? This guide explains 20 vol vs 30 vol vs 40 vol, with simple decision rules to help you lift hair safely.

Quick answer

Choose 20 volume for gentle toning or subtle lift, 30 volume for standard lightening, and 40 volume only for stubborn dark hair or dramatic lift in a single session.

What developer volume actually means

Developer volume refers to the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the cream or liquid. Higher volumes lift the hair cuticle more aggressively, allowing bleach powder to remove more natural pigment in one application. Lower volumes work slower but are gentler on the hair shaft.

Volume does not affect the final lightness by itself—it affects the speed and degree of lift. Using 40 vol does not guarantee four levels of lift if your hair is very dark or resistant; it simply allows more lift per session, at the cost of increased damage risk.

Trade-off: speed versus condition

Faster lift with 30 or 40 volume means more cuticle swelling and moisture loss. This can leave hair porous, brittle, or prone to breakage if not cared for. Lower volumes (20 vol) require multiple sessions but preserve more of the hair's natural strength.

If you are lightening previously colored hair or have fine, damaged, or chemically treated strands, stick with 20 vol to avoid compounding damage. For virgin dark hair that needs a dramatic change, 40 vol may be necessary, but always strand test first.

Decision rules: Which developer volume for which job?

  • Use 20 volume when: You want to tone bleached hair, deposit color with a tint, or lift only 1–2 levels. Also choose 20 vol if your hair is fine, damaged, or previously colored.
  • Use 30 volume when: You need to lift 2–3 levels on medium to dark blonde or light brown hair. It is the standard choice for most at-home bleaching and works well with a 1:2 bleach-to-developer ratio.
  • Use 40 volume when: You have very dark or resistant hair and need to lift 3–4 levels in one session. Limit application to 30–45 minutes, avoid overlapping onto previously bleached areas, and always do a strand test first. Never use 40 vol on scalp or on hair that has been chemically treated within the past 6 weeks.
